History Textbooks
is it just me or is russian history in american textbooks wrong and mixes ukrainian history with it?

im ukrainian and what we’re learning in american school is fairly wrong. they mix russian history with ukrainian history. just because ukraine is less known doesn’t mean that the russian govt. has the right to mix ukaine’s history. answer if you are ukrainian!

The trouble is that Ukraine has not been a independent country for centuries as it has been under the control of Poland, Lithuania and Russia over the last few centuries. The Ukraine has been dominated by these foreign powers since the collapse Kievan Rus in the 13th Century after the mongol invasion. I agree that the period of the Golden Age is ignored in history textbooks.
However, since then it control of the country has been fought over by other countries and Ukraine was forced in 1654 to pledge allegiance to the Russian Czar and by the late 1770′s Russia had taken control of the country and had massive influence on the country after that.
After the Russian war effort in WW1 collapsed there was a brief period from 1917-1920 when the Ukrainians Peoples Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic was formed, but this was dissolved due to Polish defeat by the Bolsheviks and the Ukrainian SSR was formed.
Since then the Ukrainians were under the Soviet heel, and were forced to endure persecutions and a number of famines. While it is difficult to accept but Ukraine was part of the USSR and its history forms part of Ukrainians history. Russian history will always play an important part in the Ukraine’s history over the years as it has had massive influence over events.
Finally how far should history be favoured over one area over another, there were a large number of Soviet Republics and they all form part of the history of USSR, and their history will be ‘mixed’ with Soviet history.
